Grass-Fed Meats of all kinds are your best food sources for perfectly balanced essential fatty acids.  Right, that statement is all about Omega-3 fatty acids and the really good news is that there's actually many more nutritional benefits.  Yet in spite of the fact that any and all grass-fed meats may be the world's most perfect food for man, unless your whole diet follows the Real Diet of Man, eating some grass-fed meat along with the normal American fare will still leave you with nutritional deficiencies.  Therefore to optimize ones health it requires a whole hog approach across the board, not just the addition of one food.
As for the nutritionally focused scientific reports and books, most of them do a great job of pointing out the horrible consequences of Omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies.  But what is really frustrating to those of us in agriculture is that the researchers seem to be clueless about meats and even which foods and oils are fit to eat.  And more alarmingly most of them fixate on supplementation rather than eating naturally.  So the books listed below make good reads for the most part, but for a list of the very best foods to eat for naturally optimizing ones health and well-being perfectly without any supplementation, go to Food Analysis:  GI, GL, Fat Ratio, and Inflammation.

Here are some very interesting books written by scientific researchers.
In his book, Andrew Stoll, the director of the psychopharmacology research lab at Boston's McLean Hospital and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, suggests that restoring our body's natural balance of omega-3s may help alleviate (and prevent) many types of depression--even for those who don't respond to traditional antidepressants.  Omega-3s may also prove helpful with other problems, such as the inability to handle stress, memory loss, and cognitive decline.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
Michael Schmidt, a clinical scientist specializing in molecular nutrition, describes current research into the link between dietary fat and the brain, and how the balance of essentially fatty acids in the blood influences neurological health.  Schmidt explains how most "low-fat" diets are actually unhealthy and how many people today get little or none of important fatty acids like omega-3 in their junk-food meals.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
Alan C. Logan is a member of the Harvard Medical School's Mind-Body Medical Institute.  The nutrition editor of the International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine, and his articles have been published in Nutrition, Arthritis and Rheumatology, American Journal of Hypertension, Medical Hypotheses, Hospital Physician, and Medical Clinics of North America.  The Brain Diet explores the connection between diet and mental health as well as the importance of diet in realizing the full potential of our intelligence. Dr. Logan shows how poor nutrition hinders the development of our children's intelligence and adversely affects mental health and success.  Dr. Logan explains the science behind how our brains function, he also provides suggestions for healthy diet.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
N-3 Fatty acids are essential compounds in higher eukaryotes and are linked to various health benefits in humans including cognitive and visual development of infants and reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and mental illnesses of adults.  Several health authorities and professional organisations have made dietary recommendations for intake of n-3 fatty acids to achieve nutrient adequacy and prevent and treat chronic diseases, e.g. cardiovascular diseases.  This book reviews the recent knowledge of nutritional needs and sources of n-3 fat and presents production strategies for microbial DHA and EPA production.  The author is Anita Nordeng Jakobsen, Ph.D.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
Loren Cordain, Ph.D., follows his success of The Paleo Diet with the first book ever to detail the exercise-enhancing effects of a diet similar to that of our Stone Age ancestors.  When The Paleo Diet was published, advocating a return to the diet of our ancestors (high protein, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables), the book received brilliant reviews from the medical and nutritional communities.  Jennie Brand-Miller, coauthor of the bestselling Glucose Revolution, called it "without a doubt the most nutritious diet on the planet."  Doctors Michael and Mary Dan Eades, authors of Protein Power, said, "We can't recommend The Paleo Diet highly enough."
Now Dr. Cordain joins with USA triathlon and cycling elite coach Joe Friel to adapt the Paleo Diet to the needs of athletes.  The authors show:  (1) Why the typical athletic diet (top-heavy with grains, starches, and refined sugars) is detrimental to recovery, performance, and health.  (2) How the glycemic load and acid-base balance impact performance.  (3) Why consumption of starches and simple sugars is only beneficial in the immediate post-exercise period.  At every level of competition, The Paleo Diet for Athletes can maximize performance in a range of endurance sports.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
. . . . and here are some interesting books too.
Casey's bent is toward natural resources which he gives much time in this as well as in the rest of his books.  An interesting thinker and an effortless writer, Doug is always provocative and occasionally right -- in a big way.  The problem is he's not always right.  It is crucial to be in the right sector with him and that usually means gold stocks.  He's worth paying attention to for that alone, especially today.  This book will definitely pull one back from the brink of socialist thinking.  It is the quickest read to understand how the world economy and politics interact.  If you have not read Doug Casey, this is a prime opportunity.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
Jeffery Nichols is an authority on the gold market.  But like many "authorities" in markets often times their predictions are too early.  This 1992 effort was about eight years too early.  But it sure is relevant today!  If you are interested in participating in the current Gold Boom that should persist until at least 2010, this book is a good read.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
Paul Christopherson explores the lies that govern America--why people go along with them and what it costs to do so. It reveals the plutocracy that benefits and examines what needs to be done to bring back a true democracy.
It's no secret: The wealthy demand--and get--what they want from the system at the expense of everyone else. Seven key lies advance their agenda:
* The way to grow the economy is to stimulate the people at the top.
* Loose money is another way to grow the economy.
* The stock market is the best investment and the best economic indicator.
* Executive compensation is tied to performance.
* Regulation is bad; deregulation is good.
* Bailing out Wall Street was necessary to preserve the system.
* The health care question is about who pays.
These claims are driving the biggest economic crisis in modern history, and producing a society ready to explode with anger. Provocative and sometimes funny, Pants on Fire looks past the individual problems to the eventual, necessary solution.  The link goes to Amazon.com.
